Jessie stood at her windowsill, looking out. “It didn’t seem fair, you know. You guys were having a great time, and I could only watch you like it was some weird TV show.”

“It wasn’t though. You were really there. You can talk to Viv through me. I don’t mind.”

“Well, I do. I hate depending on other people.”

Emma walked to the window and stood beside her cousin. Outside, a robin had made a nest in one of the slender trees planted on the sidewalk. She watched the mother robin land and feed her chicks.

“…so I left. Sometimes I need to walk and think things out. Make a plan. I’ve been in some scrapes in my life, but nothing like this.” She held up a semitransparent hand. “I walked until I got bored of walking. Then I started thinking about your little séance and that old lady ghost. When I was alive, I thought I’d talked with all the local spirits, but I’d never seen her. I wondered, ‘Who’s this old lady? Where does she come from? Where is she so keen to get back to?’ And I followed her all the way to the bookstore.”

“Lihn founded the bookstore. She passed through the veil, but she comes back to visit.”

“I watched her for a while. It was boring, so I thought I’d go check out the murder scene.”

“You did? Did you know Corny?” Emma asked.

“I had no idea he’d gone off his rocker. I mean, the back room was full of boxes with dried-out dead animals and electrical equipment and robots—robots! What a freak show!”

“I hope it wasn’t upsetting.”

“Upsetting? It was awesome! If that’s the kind of thing you’re dealing with, then count me in.”

“You want to help?”

“Barrow and Day psychic detectives are in business.”

“I know where to start.”
